By tradition our studios are on R&R during the December holidays and for much of January. It is a time to Refresh and Redirect our strategies for the new year. While the artists are enjoying their snow days, the AOS Staff is busy sorting and framing art and getting ready for shows that are coming up this spring.

The first show on our calendar is the VSA /Accessible Expressions 2018 Exhibit which opens on March 24th in Westerville. Art accepted for this show was make by: Jesse Fields, Nate Lucal, James O’Dor and Tony Ringholz. It’s a “big deal” to have work chosen for this state-wide competitive exhibit. Congratulations guys!

We know that all of the artists are anxious to get back to their clay and easels. The winter studio groups will begin on January 23rd and 25th. There is more great art to be created!

TERRY WALKDEN has found art making to be a great pleasure and participates in both AOS Painting and Ceramic studios. He pays close attention to detail in all that he creates. Terry’s curiosity has led him to some unique experiments this year. In painting studio he made a composition of fabric applique by drawing with colored pencils, then hand-stitching to complete his design. In ceramic studio he carved a bas-relief plaque with a bird. Unfortunately, the large tile cracked in the firing, but with a supportive wooden mount the finished art is even more exceptional. Terry is a hard worker and often assists in AOS tile production.

On Saturday, March 25th, Four AOS artists were honored during the 21st Accessible Expressions Ohio exhibition. Jesse Fields, Debbie Deitrich, Tammy Twaddle, and Hallie Cox were a part of a state wide celebration of the arts. This uplifting event is organized by VSA Ohio, the State Organization on Arts and Disability, based in Columbus. The Day of The Arts for All displayed a wide range of talents from painting, drawing, photography, and mixed media. AOS artist’s pieces were submitted, judged, selected, and displayed alongside artists with disabilities of all ages across the state.

The exhibition was on display for the full month of March, and artists were recognized by coming up on stage and receiving a certificate. Jesse, Debbie, and Hallie were able to make the trip to Columbus to receive their well deserved honor. The show provided a great opportunity for our artists to feel connected to a larger creative community and to be celebrated as the talented and inspirational artists that they are. We look forward to seeing what next year brings. Congratulations again to our artists!

TAMMY TWADDLE was one of the Charter Artists of Artists’ Open Studio. She has been drawing and painting with us since 2004. In recent years, Tammy has been combining materials to create some intriguing mixed media art. One of these, “Picket Fences” has won a spot in the Accessible Expressions Ohio exhibit sponsored by VSA and will tour the state throughout 2017. Keep up the good work Tammy!

Ashley Payne and James O'Dor presented slide shows and commented on their art work for an Elder College class at Firelands College, BGSU last week. Ashley shared her love for painting and explained some of her experimental techniques. James proudly showed slides of his mosaic art to the class and received many accolades. The topic of the class, "Encouraging a Creative Community" was presented by Lynda Stoneham, managing director of Artists' Open Studio.

JEREMY RISNER

Jeremy makes his creative mark in both AOS Ceramic Studio and Painting Studio. His work is very expressive of his good humor and determination. Jeremy’s paint choices are as bright and cheerful as his personality. Be sure to check out his gallery page and our Instagram posts to keep in touch with Jeremy’s art making.

ASHLEY PAYNE

Florals and landscapes are Ashley’s favorite subjects for the acrylic paintings that she makes in Artists’ Open Studio. However, she occasionally enjoys doing some experimentation with different media and styles. Check Ashley’s Gallery page to see more of her work. Ashley is a great asset to AOS for her ability to articulate her passion for making art in our studios. She represents her fellow artists on our Board of Directors and works as a Services Advocate at Christie Lane.

JESSE FIELDS

As we begin our third year of blogging, we would like to introduce one of our newest artists, Jesse Fields as Artist of the Month. Here is a photo of him with his work at his first Visions Revealed show last June. Since then Jesse has been prolific. We are giving you a sneak peek at just one of his acrylic paintings that will be displayed at our Visions Revealed 2016 Exhibit. It opens on June 17th. Come see what Jesse and his friends have to share.

We at Artists' Open Studio wish you a very enjoyable Thanksgiving Day with family and friends.

SHANE DiPERNA’s busy work schedule has interfered with his activities at AOS painting and ceramic studios recently, but we still have some of his art on display. He is very proud of a portrait of his son Carson made with soft pastel. By contrast, his acrylic paintings are bold interpretations of landscapes and animals. In ceramic studio he has created many large vessels and bowls. Visit Shane’s page in our Artist Gallery.
