OUR MISSION

Developing Individual Abilities Through Creative Expression

Since 2004, Artists’ Open Studio, Inc. (AOS) has been a 501(c)3 non-profit organization providing local adult artists with developmental disabilities a space to express themselves through art, specifically in painting and hand-built ceramics.

AOS serves over 40 artists with disabilities in the Huron County community and also maintains a steady waitlist of artists who are eager to participate.

AOS provides:

  • Access to the proper art studio space - both painting and clay studios

  • Access to the appropriate fine art materials

  • Art Exhibit opportunities

  • Income opportunities through art sales

  • Work opportunities through product manufacturing

  • Space for any and all local artists to participate in open studio sessions and exhibits

Our passion

Since its inception in 2004, AOS has been dedicated to celebrating and honoring the creative achievements of individuals with developmental differences. Individuals with disabilities have historically been forced to self-advocate for the opportunity to work, live, and achieve as viable members of their communities. AOS seeks to amplify the voices of artists with disabilities in the community by supporting their individual creativity through the visual arts.

AOS invites local artists to participate during open studio sessions. Uniquely expressive art results when artists with and without disabilities work independently with the media of their choice and are encouraged by their fellow artists and facilitators. This is where the magic happens.

When you visit our studios sessions, exhibits, or special events, you will likely see that AOS artists are:

  • Utilizing self determination and autonomy during the creative process

  • Creating fantastic works of visual art

  • Engaging in a diverse and collaborative community of local artists

  • Expressing their voice and talents to the community through local and statewide exhibits

  • Earning income through individual art sales

  • Producing handmade merchandise for sale and support of our studio in cooperation with CLI Inc.

our story

AOS has been a hidden gem in the community for over 15 years. AOS was founded by Christie Lane School art teacher Lynda Stoneham in 2004. Stoneham quickly learned that art opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities stopped after graduation, leaving an enormous opportunity for arts access and programming. AOS began with Stoneham’s vision and the support of the Huron County Board of Developmental Disabilities. CLI, Inc. generously provided a space for its clay and painting studios at no cost.

In April 2019, AOS became a free standing, self-sustaining non-profit organization, no longer receiving money from tax levy dollars. The shift to independence forced the organization to adapt, stretch, and seek opportunities to spread the mission even farther. AOS is now primarily funded through local foundations, grants and private donors. Community members also support AOS by buying products and individual artwork, available for purchase here and at Main Street Studio.

In July 2020, AOS launched Main Street Studio at 32 East Main Street in Norwalk. This new space is key in not only increasing our visibility but fully realizing our mission.

Main Street Studio at 32 East Main Street is a gallery, working art studio and retail space. AOS uses this space to engage the community in local events, unearth local artists, and support our artists with disabilities in ways we've previously not been able to. AOS clay and painting studios are now held at Main Street Studios, creating a vibrant arts hub in the center of Huron County.
